Looking out the window tonight
I see Jerusalem burning
artificial light waving crimson and blue glory
my Japanese rock garden far from Tokyo
recalling the sprinkled profanity in father’s sermon
and how it never failed to keep our attention
like mosses with hand lenses
or the front desk clerk at the Motel 6 surrounded by hungry chickens.
Jerusalem burns and I am still
as if I am trapped in a job I hate
where the best part of the day is when I can get away from my desk
and go to the restroom and stare at myself in the mirror
taking extra time washing and drying my hands.
